International Thespian Society Meeting

Dorothy Lee ’26 in Arts | October 11, 2024

Last Monday, the Lawrenceville Troupe of the International Thespians Society (ITS) gathered in the KAC Cafe for the first time in over 10 years to celebrate its re-introduction to the Periwig Club. Branching across schools all over the world, the ITS offers students opportunities to connect with those outside of their respective theater programs who share a similar passion for the performing arts. The events and competitions hosted by the program allow thespians to share their experiences and knowledge with each other, while exploring opportunities in the theatrical arts post-graduation.

Hosted by ITS President Sydney Wang ’25, the meeting on Monday specifically focused on planning Periwig’s trip to the New Jersey Thespian Festival. Come January 18, Lawrenceville’s thespians will travel to Washington Township High School in South Jersey for two days of activities in theatrical disciplines of their choice.

Theatre is an art composed of a multitude of different sub-fields. A single production calls for studies in music, dance, design, history, electrics, sociology, psychology, optics, and so much more. As a result, every student artist contributing to a Periwig performance strives to learn something different from their experience.

The New Jersey Thespian Festival will host an assortment of events, ranging from improvisational acting to lighting design, in the form of workshops, showcases, and competitions. Attendees will also be able to audition for summer programs and internships in the area.

Overall, this announcement was met with great excitement, especially surrounding the wide variety of events offered. Throughout the meeting, the students whispered among themselves about the events they each hoped to participate in.

Their excitement was a testament to the robust community surrounding the theatre program at Lawrenceville. Every year, students returning and new gather in the KAC to celebrate and engage in a shared passion for the arts. While their specific interests may vary, in the end, the work of every student comes together in the form of a final performance.

This creative collaboration is what the ITS hopes to foster worldwide, across different schools and beyond the walls of an individual theater. In joining this project once again, the Periwig Club hopes to provide a greater range of opportunities and connections to Lawrenceville’s student artists.
