On October 6, FirstBank Stadium was in a black-and-gold frenzy. Vanderbilt University had beat the #1 Associated-Press-ranked University of Alabama, 40-35, in a game that made history: never before had Vanderbilt beaten an AP top-5 team. At the final whistle, Vanderbilt fans erupted into celebration, and fans in the Vanderbilt black and gold began to storm the field, as chants of “to the river!” began to echo around the stadium. The chant was directed at the stadium’s goalposts, which soon became paraded down the streets of Nashville, as Vanderbilt fans pried the posts from the field with the end goal of dumping the posts into the Cumberland River. This objective was met, as following the 2.5-mile trek from the stadium, the posts soon became engulfed by the icy Cumberland, only to be fished out by the local fire department hours later. As Vanderbilt fans continue to celebrate, it remains to be seen whether the Commodores can keep the momentum gained from its historic victory over the Crimson Tide, and perhaps become a dark-horse team in the Southeastern Conference.
