Faculty Tribute: Isaiah Chery

We vividly remember arriving on the first day of preseason, which started with a team meeting to introduce the new staff. Although Mr. Chery, later known affectionately as Coach Zay, was soft-spoken, it was evident that his enthusiasm and love for Lawrenceville were strong. As he was a recent graduate of the School, we loved listening to him talk about old stories, and we immediately connected over parallel football and track memories. Af ter  this initial interaction, we could tell he was going to be an influential person in our final year at Lawrenceville.

During football season, he was a tremendous help to us and our teammates, as he was always a big presence on the sidelines during games and practice. Coach Zay never failed to use his experience to provide valuable advice. We always admired the way he was so patient with younger and newer players on the team, teaching correct techniques as well as instilling a competitive spirit in order to challenge the older players.  On the track team, Coach Zay took on a more pivotal role, becoming the sprinters’ coach for the winter and spring seasons. This role truly allowed Coach Zay’s passion and enthusiasm for Lawrenceville to flourish. No matter how rainy the weather was or how low our spirits were, one thing was certain: Coach Zay was going to elevate the energy in all facets; whether it would be showing us a new drill or even joining in on our workout for the day. Regardless of the method, Coach Zay’s true joy resounded when mentoring young athletes, students, and Lawrentians.

Whether waving at you from his bike or making sure you get to class on time, Coach Zay always emanates a calm, warm, and endearing demeanor similar to that of an older brother—an older brother who has been in your shoes and wants you to succeed.

It is tough to envision coming back to Lawrenceville without Coach Zay. His presence will surely live on in the ways he has helped us, the ideals he has taught us, and the long-lasting bonds he has formed with us. Thank you, Coach Zay. We love you, and we will miss you.
