If one person could embody liveliness and spirit, it would be Mrs. Buckles. For the past four years, Mrs. Buckles has been both the heart and backbone of Lawrenceville’s pride and joy, The Lawrence. Not only has she donated her Wednesday and Thursday nights to reading and editing a dozen of pages of articles each week, but she has also brought her contagious and relatable energy to the office with her, making the workload a little lighter for us all.
Before formally meeting her, I thought Mrs. Buckles was the woman who threw a fit after hearing the unnecessary usage of the word “like’’ in conversations. However, it was through seemingly small interactions that each Board of The Lawrence developed an admiration for our faculty advisor. We have been incredibly lucky to have such a real and approachable advisor.
Mrs. Buckles is full of wisdom and advice, as many have learned over the years. When it comes to writing, she made it clear that dangling modifiers are forbidden. Even more than what’s on the physical page, she taught us the importance behind the actual process. We would often hear her say, “nothing good happens when you hurry,” even when deadlines are far off, encouraging us to keep on task—Mrs. Buckles not only kept us organized, but she constantly reminded us why it is important to do so. This lesson was especially enforced by the fact that no one wanted to have a page keeping Mrs. Buckles in the basement of Pop while Public Safety was attempting to close the building. Out of all the lessons she taught us, one in particular impacted all aspects of our dynamic as a board: having a good sense of humor is key. She allowed all of us on the board to take ourselves a little less seriously in an environment where it feels pretty difficult to do so, making our tiny little office a place we enjoyed cramming into for the sake of socialization.
While Lawrenceville is a large school with many unfamiliar faces, Mrs. Buckles has enjoyed the opportunities working with The Lawrence gave her, allowing her to get to know an entirely new batch of students other than those in her classes and House. Her name and legacy in the School has impacted an even larger pool of Lawrentians. When many say that Mrs. Buckles is the best, The Lawrence can certainly confirm this statement.
